Although costs of living can be high, especially in major cities, the U.S. offers a vibrant and diverse cultural scene. If you want to experience the feel of a bustling city on the East Coast, New York, Boston, and Chicago offer a lively and exciting atmosphere for postgraduate students looking to relocate after college. However, if warm weather and the beach sound more appealing, cities like Miami and Los Angeles offer diverse populations and endless opportunities. A F-1 or J-1 student visa is required, but there are options for post-study work permits through the Optional Practical Training.

No. 2 - Canada

Known for its high-quality education and its welcoming environment towards international students, Canada offers a robust academic environment for students (Click here for Times Higher Education’s ranking of Canada’s top five universities). Because this country possesses a growing job market across a diverse range of industries and favorable immigration policies, it’s the perfect destination for workers looking to hone their skills. Compared to the United States, Canada’s cost of living is relatively low and offers excellent healthcare and safety. Although a study permit is required, there are options for post-graduate work permits for those looking to extend their stay.

Home to historic institutions and world-class research facilities, the United Kingdom is a top destination for post-graduate students. There, students can access a wide range of job opportunitie, especially in finance, technology, and academia. Though living costs, particularly in cities like London, can be quite high, it offers a rich cultural heritage and history. Perhaps consider other historic or atmospheric options like Edinburgh, Scotland and catch the annual fringe festival or the array of other creative and dynamic university towns like York or Manchester, particularly if music is your winddown. A student visa (Tier 4) is required, but options for post-study work visas (Graduate Route) are available.

Additionally, its robust economy offers a plethora of job opportunities in finance, technology, and pharmaceutical sectors for post-graduate students looking to develop hands-on work experience in those fields. Although living costs are relatively high, a vibrant culture and high quality of life can be found there, making it a desirable destination. If you want to experience a big, multicultural city, perhaps consider Trinity College Dublin or University College of Dublin. For a more local and authentic Irish town feel, University College of Cork is a terrific option. A student visa (Stamp 2) is required, but options for post-graduation work permits are available through the Third Level Graduate Scheme.

Although the cost of living can be high, the country’s impressive infrastructure and high quality of life make it a desirable place to study post-grad. A student visa (Student’s Pass) is required, but there are options for post-graduation work permits through the Singapore Work Holiday Programme.

No. 6- Australia

Though living expenses can vary throughout the country, Australia’s high standard of living and favorable climate make it a desirable destination for many postgraduate students. Its globally recognized universities offer an abundance of research opportunities and diverse academic programs. It also boasts a strong job market across sectors such as healthcare, engineering, and IT, while also offering opportunities for skilled migrants. A student visa (subclass 500) is required, with a post-graduation work option through the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485). However, the increase of 125% in application fees on July 1st, as well as the recent government-imposed increase in minimum funds requirements for international students in Australia has dropped in its appeal.
