Marán graduated with a first-class honours in Marine Biology from Queens University Belfast, completing his final year dissertation on the movement ecology of downstream migrating silver eels. Results from this, his Undergraduate Award winning study, were used in the analysis of work reported to the EU Commission. He has worked in areas including lab-based fish examinations, commercial fisheries, and the management, conservation, protection, improvement and development of inland fisheries, within applied research organisations in Ireland and New Zealand. Having graduated in 2013, he has recently returned home from a year working and travelling through New Zealand and South-east Asia. Marán plans to commence postgraduate study in the near future, working towards a career in aquatic research. Unsurprisingly, he enjoys fishing, hiking, and keeping fit.
